This lunar eclipse was recorded in Babylonian cuneiform during the reign of Nabonassar, whose reign later became a fixed chronological anchor for ancient astronomy. The “Era of Nabonassar”, beginning 747 BCE, was later adopted by Greek astronomers like Ptolemy because it is reliable. The reliability of this lunar eclipse is because it can be found in multiple Babylonian eclipse tablets, at least three exemplars are known today.
Nabonassar brought native rule back to Babylon after twenty-three years of Chaldean rule. His reign saw the beginning of a new era characterized by the systematic maintenance of chronologically precise historical records. Both the Babylonian Chronicle and the Ptolemaic Canon begin with his accession to the throne.
